Emergency Medical Technician (Remote Care)
Our Emergency Medical Technician (Remote Care) course is designed to equip members of an emergency medical team to contribute a professional role in advanced trauma and medical illness management. Whether as a member of a close protection team or as a remote expedition team medic, participants will be able to learn and assimilate the knowledge, advanced skills and techniques beyond those required of a basic Emergency Medical Technician. By the end of the course participants will be able to assess safely, treat, and manage single and multiple casualties, understand diagnose and treat medical illnesses arising from trauma, including the administration of drugs for patients with medical conditions and for which no immediate full medical care (Doctor) is available. The course is divided between classroom sessions covering the advanced principles of trauma management, pathophysiology, infection control and the principles of medical diagnosis, and practical sessions including chest and abdominal examination techniques, taking and interpreting a 12 lead ECG, managing and executing confined space extrication with Medivac. Students will learn how to use and be assessed in the use of advanced life support equipment including minor surgical procedures and invasive techniques. This course includes anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology above that required for our EMT course. It also covers pharmacology and drug administration. It is therefore necessary to either have attended a basic course in anatomy and physiology or be a current holder of our EMT certificate. The course lasts for five days including staged assessments, and a final written examination with practical assessment. This course is designed for people who are currently working or will be required to work with remote care expedition teams, or close protection teams, where hospitalisation is over 24 hours away. It is also suitable for those currently holding an EMT(remote care) certificate requiring refresher training, or CMT’s discharged from the RAF or Army seeking employment in the remote care industry. Although a full set of notes is provided, all classroom sessions are based on the text ‘Anatomy and Physiology in health and illness’ by Ross and Wilson (not provided but available from Amazon). Prospective participants are encouraged to obtain a copy for pre-course reading. Homework will be issued after each day with a self-assessment questionnaire the following morning. The course requires participants to be prepared to study anatomy and physiology to a higher level than that required for our EMT course, pathophysiology, pharmacology, pathology and infective agents. Bookings may be made with our centre manager, by email or by phone at our Plymouth training centre.
