Our Emergency Medical Technician course is designed to equip members of an emergency medical team to contribute a professional role in trauma management. Whether at an open sports or public event requiring immediate care, or attending a major or minor incident, participants will be able to learn and assimilate the knowledge, skills and techniques beyond those required of first aid. By the end of the course participants will be to be able to assess safely, treat, and manage single and multiple casualties. The course is divided between classroom sessions covering the basic principles of trauma management, and practical sessions in a simulator, for example, managing and executing confined space extrication with and without spinal immobilisation. Participants will understand their role alongside the other emergency services and will be able to carry out professional handovers. Students will learn how to use airway adjuncts, oxygen and analgesic therapy equipment, pulse oximetry, and the automated external defibrillator. The course covers the fundamentals of anatomy and physiology, and will enable participants to assimilate the techniques required to assist paramedics and doctors in applying advanced life support techniques. The course lasts for five days including staged assessments, a final written examination and practical assessment. This course is designed for people who currently work within the private ambulance sector at the Ambulance Care Assistant/First aid level, and who are current holders of a first aid at work certificate. It is also suitable for those currently holding an EMT certificate requiring refresher training. Although a full set of notes is provided, all classroom sessions are based on the text ‘Anatomy and Physiology in health and illness’ by Ross and Wilson (not provided but available from Amazon). Prospective participants are encouraged to obtain a copy for pre-course reading. Homework will be issued after each day with a self-assessment questionnaire the following morning. The course requires participants to be prepared to study anatomy and physiology and the fundamentals of patient handling in trauma management. Bookings may be made with our centre manager, by email or by phone at our Plymouth training centre.
